Subject : GOVERNMENT SLASHES DRIVER LICENCE TESTING PROGRAM
Author : Brett Whiteley MP
The Lennon Labor Government has today revealed that it is slashing driver licence testing at 14 locations across Tasmania.

This will ensure that access to driver licence testing is even more difficult than it currently is, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Brett Whiteley said today.

"Many young Tasmanians are already facing delays of up to nine weeks to sit for their drivers' licence," Mr Whiteley said.

"Bizarrely, the Lennon Government's response to this growing backlog is to slash access to the driver licence system as well as cutting funding in the recent Budget.

"The Minister for Infrastructure, Jim Cox, didn't even have the courage to put his own name to this decision to slash services in rural Tasmania - instead a bureaucrat announced the bad news."

Country Tasmania towns which will no longer have driver licence testing are Alonnah (Bruny Island), Avoca, Bicheno, Bothwell, Bridport, Derby, Fingal, Nubeena, Ringarooma, Rosebery, St Marys, Strahan, Swansea and Zeehan.

"The Government's excuse for cutting back driver licence testing locations is that they do not have "realistic traffic environments." So does that mean that drivers who have got their licence in Hobart are not able to drive in a much bigger city such as Sydney or Melbourne? And if you sit your licence in Wynyard, can you not competently drive in Hobart?

"This logic is nothing more than a lame attempt to disguise very bad news for rural and regional Tasmanian towns and their residents.

"Cutting the number of places to sit driver licences and cutting the Budget for driver licensing is not the answer to overcoming Tasmania's growing road toll."
