2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future - Backing in Incat to create more Tasmanian jobs

A re-elected majority Rockliff Liberal Government will partner with iconic Tasmanian shipbuilder Incat to double their shipbuilding capacity and deliver up to 500 jobs, as well new training facilities.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the Liberals’ 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future was all about supporting Tasmanian business and industry to grow, invest and create new jobs.

"It’s remarkable to think that from right here on the shores of the Derwent, Incat is making the greatest vessels of their kind in the world,” Premier Rockliff said.

“That speaks volumes for not only great Tasmanian innovation, but also the kind of environment that a stable Government creates, allowing businesses to grow.

“For half a century, Incat has forged a reputation for innovative design and construction of world-class, lightweight, high-speed aluminium vessels, and our investment will secure that for decades more.

“We are investing $5.25 million and Incat are investing $5.25 million into this expansion, which will support up to 500 new jobs over the next three years, including 100 in the first 12 months.

“Incat will double its workforce and its capacity, with new production halls, more floor space and Tasmania’s first marine recharging facilities.

“The new recharging facilities for electric ferries will future proof the site as the industry transitions to battery electric in coming years.

“Importantly, this will unlock extraordinary new training opportunities for hundreds of apprentices.

“Already, Incat is Tasmania’s largest single-site employer of trainees and apprentices. This is exactly what we want, more jobs so young Tasmanians can choose to stay, to learn, earn and raise a family.

“Under our Government, Incat has grown from strength to strength as a true powerhouse of the Tasmanian economy.

“For each vessel constructed at Incat in Tasmania, around 65 per cent of the total sales price is spent and retained in Tasmania, that’s a good return in anyone’s books.

“Our Government has a proud record of supporting business like Incat to thrive and create jobs. We have gone from the worst-performing state under the Labor-Green minority Government, to delivered historically low unemployment with 53,000 new jobs created on our watch.

"Only a majority Liberal Government will create opportunities to deliver more jobs for Tasmanians."

Investment: $5.25 million.
