Singing the praises of unsung heroes

Will Hodgman, Premier
Liberal Member for Franklin

Congratulations to the outstanding individuals and organisation recognised today at the Kingborough Awards.

Every day thousands of volunteers across Tasmania make a positive difference to the lives of others and while they don’t ask for thanks, they deserve to have their efforts recognised and appreciated.

The Kingborough Council today acknowledged four individuals and one community group for their outstanding contribution to the community.

  • Citizen of the Year, Anthony Owen – who for over two generations has encouraged young people to be active through cricket programs.
  • Young Citizen of the Year, Freya Cox – who from a young age has dedicated many hours to helping people in need through supporting local charity Kingborough Helping Hands and volunteering for Loui’s Van.
  • Community Group of the Year, Friends of Peter Murrell Reserve – who have worked tirelessly to make the reserve a flora and fauna sanctuary for Kingborough.
  • Certificates of Appreciation, (two certificates) Hester van Niekerk for her work in raising awareness and funds for childhood cancer and Lindsay Wilson, for his work mentoring young people at the Kingston Sailing Club.

On behalf of the broader community I want to thank the winners and all volunteers who make an invaluable contribution to strengthening our community.
