Committed to securing a team of our own, not Labor stunts

Peter Gutwein, Treasurer
The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to strengthening football in every region of our State, while methodically working through the steps required to secure licenses for an AFL and AFLW team of our own.
Despite the completely inaccurate reporting of my comments yesterday, make no mistake, the Federal Labor Party’s $25 million election commitment was designed to curry political favour and Tasmanians saw right through it.
It’s a matter for federal Labor to explain their funding commitments and how they prioritised those commitments over other matters.
In stark contrast, the Hodgman Liberal Government has established the Football Tasmania Board to solidify the foundation of football right throughout the state.
It is no secret that the Tasmanian Government is working with the football community to build the case for a Tasmanian team in the AFL.
The case we are building is not and never has been reliant on a $25 million handout from the Federal Government.
The Government will soon be announcing the AFL Project Team, which will be charged with the responsibility of developing the business case and advising Government on what is required to establish a team of our own.
The Hodgman Liberal Government is focused on bringing the State together to support our bid for a team of our own, not glib announcements which do nothing to serve our long term football interests.
