The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics Building Activity data shows a sharp increase in the number of dwellings being constructed in Tasmania.
In the year to December 2017, dwelling commencements were 15.4% higher than in the year to December 2016, and on a trend basis the number of dwelling commencements were 29.1% higher than the December 2016 quarter.
The Hodgman Liberal Government is implementing a comprehensive, state-wide Plan to address the current housing shortage. Today’s building figures show the market is responding and building the dwellings Tasmanians need.
The strong building results comes on the back of positive March NAB Monthly Business Survey data showing business confidence and conditions in Tasmania lead the nation.
The survey showed business conditions in Tasmania increased in trend terms, by six index points, to a positive 25 index points compared to the previous month, the highest in Australia.
Business confidence was also the strongest in the nation – increasing in trend terms, by three index points, to positive 15 index points compared to the previous month, well above the national average and equal only with Western Australia.
The Hodgman Liberal Government’s long-term Plan is about putting the right economic framework in place to improve the lives of all Tasmanians.
These latest economic indicators are yet more evidence that our Plan is delivering for Tasmanians.
