Sarah Courtney, Minister for Health
The health and wellbeing of Tasmanians is our number one priority as we face the challenges presented to us by the coronavirus pandemic.
The National Cabinet acting on the advice of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee has made the decision to temporarily suspend all non-urgent elective surgery.
This means from 11:59pm tonight only Category 1 and some exceptional Category 2 surgery will continue until further notice.
Decisions on the category of patients will remain at the discretion of our medical professionals.
These are the difficult decisions we are having to make as we continue to prepare our hospitals around Tasmania for the fight against coronavirus and the future impacts it may have on our EDs.
We thank and welcome the Commonwealth’s Department of Health for ordering more than 300 million additional masks with 30 million expected in the next two weeks, and one million surgical gowns which are on order to build on our stockpile of medical protective equipment.
These are challenging times, and as the situation evolves by the hour we will continue to explore ways to better protect and care for Tasmanians.
