Facts on health

Michael Ferguson, Minister for Health
The Government has never shied away from the fact that demand pressure is growing, as it is in hospitals across Australia.
That’s why we are implementing immediate solutions like our $1.5 million ED support package for the RHH and LGH, to help relieve immediate pressure while we deliver our long-term plan to open more beds and employ more staff. Those buildings are being built right now.
The facts are:
- There is now $1.8 billion more for health than when we came to Government.
- GST is not tied, and the most important measure of health spending is in fact the proportion of a state’s overall budget.
- 30 per cent of Tasmania’s state budget is spent on health, which is the second highest spend in the nation.
- We have opened 120 more beds and recruited over 800 more staff to help meet this demand.
As the Premier said at the weekend, we are trying to meet today’s demand with yesterday’s hospitals, so we are focused on finishing the work we have started to build more facilities and make more space for services.
We reject the assertion that Tasmanian public hospitals are not safe. Tasmanians should be confident that they will receive appropriate care in their public hospitals, and we thank our incredibly hardworking staff who do a terrific job caring for patients.
