Forest industry stands strong despite asset damage
- 29 Jan, 2019
Sarah Courtney, Minister for Resources
The Hodgman Liberal Government stands proudly alongside the forest industry in the face of significant fire damage to production forests and infrastructure across the State.
Firefighters from the Tasmania Fire Service, Parks and Wildlife Serivce, Sustainable Timber Tasmania and employees of Neville Smith Forest Products have been bravely defending the Southwood industry hub, a key asset in the far south of the State.
While damage is still to be properly assessed and the site remains at risk from ember attacks, I applaud the work of firefighters at Southwood over recent days.
I also sincerely thank Sustainable Timber Tasmania, which has been assisting forest contractors whose work has been displaced by the bushfires.
In addittion, more than 100 STT employees are trained in firefighting and I am aware that many have been working long hours to assist the fire-fighting efforts and I thank them as well as the PWS, TFS and volunteers for their efforts.
The forest industry is always exposed to risk from bushfires but Tasmanians can have great confidence in the skills, commitment and bravery of those who work in it.
