Quarterly Housing Report
- 11 Apr, 2019
Roger Jaensch, Minister for Housing
The release of the Quarterly Housing Report (January-March 2019) today shows that the Hodgman Liberal Government is on track to assist over 1,600 additional households, including new supply of 941 affordable lots and homes by the end of June 2019, as part of Stage One of our Affordable Housing Strategy.
Our Affordable Housing Action Plan 2015-2019 sets out a number of targets we are working towards, to provide more affordable homes to Tasmanians in need by increasing home ownership, unlocking more land for new homes, and providing more social housing.
With three months still to go, we have now assisted 1,227 households, including 717 new lots and homes that meet a wide range of needs.
The main focus has been new social housing, with 281 dwellings completed and we have more than enough houses in the pipeline right now that ensure we meet our targets for the final quarter at the end of June 2019.
As at the end of March 2019, we have assisted a total of 1,227 new households:
- 335 households have been assisted into affordable home ownership;
- 240 affordable land lots have been released (no change since last quarter);
- 281 new social housing dwellings have been constructed;
- 260 households have been assisted into affordable private rentals; and
- 111 new units of homeless accommodation have been provided.
This builds on support the Government provides every day to those in need. In Tasmania around 12,000 households live in subsidised social housing and on average around 200 households are assisted with affordable private rentals each month.
We know there is more work to do, which is why we are investing an additional $125 million into Stage Two of our Affordable Housing Strategy, taking our total investment into affordable housing to almost $200 million over eight years – the largest ever state investment into affordable housing in Tasmania’s history.
