Statement on Royal Hobart Hospital Emergency Department
- 17 Sep, 2018
Dr Craig Quarmby, Executive Clinical Director – Royal Hobart Hospital
Our staff always do the very best they can by patients.
But as with any hospital we do have periods of peak demand which can be unpredictable and challenging.
In relation to the claims made today – I don’t find it acceptable for any patient to feel they need to sleep on the floor.
We have reviewed the circumstances relating to last night – which was an extremely busy period and it seems that a number of mental health patients who were in seats during the day, made up makeshift beds on the floor until recliners were brought in around 1.50am.
This should have happened a lot earlier – and we will be reviewing procedures because I don’t want to see it happen again.
As a hospital we always aim to provide the highest standard of care and this falls short of my expectations.
