Chief Government Whip in the Senate, Senator for Tasmania
Senator David Bushby was born in Launceston in 1965. The 4th of five children, he was educated at Punchbowl Primary School, Scotch College and later Scotch Oakburn College in Launceston. David's father, Max, was a State Liberal Member for Bass for 25 years.
He completed the combined degrees of Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws at the University of Tasmania in 1990, a Graduate Certificate in Legal Practice, also from the University of Tasmania, in 1991 and a Graduate Diploma of Business (Shipping) from the Australian Maritime College, in 1992.
David’s working life has seen him practice law in Launceston, Sydney and Hobart, work in the policy area of the Tasmanian Department of Premier & Cabinet, as an adviser to a Federal Cabinet Minister, the Government Whip in the Senate and to a State Opposition Leader, as well as the role of director of a number of private companies.
David is interested in sports of all kinds and holds a particular interest in motor sport (including the occasional participation in entry level events). He is a keen supporter of the Tasmanian Tigers cricket team and a member of the North Melbourne Football Club.
Since entering Parliament in August 2007, Senator Bushby has been active as a member of the following Senate Committees:

- Senate Select State Government Financial Management Committee
- Senate Select Fuel and Energy Committee
- Joint Standing Treaties Committee
- Joint Standing Public Accounts and Audit Committee
As a member of the Senate, Senator Bushby has developed a particular focus on economic and financial matters and this was reflected in his election by his Coalition colleagues as Chair of the Coalition Economics Committee in February 2009.
In the same month, he was also elected by Liberal Senators as Deputy Opposition Whip in the Senate.
He lives in Hobart with his wife, Sarah, and their three daughters.
