Sarah Courtney MP

Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier, and Community and Veterans’ Affairs

Sarah Courtney was elected to the Parliament of Tasmania in March 2014, representing the northern seat of Bass, and in 2016 became the Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier, and Community and Veterans Affairs.

Sarah has extensive professional credentials, having worked in senior roles in the institutional finance industry for almost a decade.  Sarah began her finance career as a quantitative analyst at ING Investment Management, moving into equity analysis and stockbroking roles with JBWere and ABN AMRO.

Her last major finance sector role was as the Business Development Manager with Regal Funds Management, working with clients in the USA, Asia and Europe.

Seeking a new career and lifestyle direction, Sarah purchased a small holding in the Tamar Valley and established a boutique vineyard, further adding to the reputation of Tasmania’s wine producing status.

Sarah believes that access to education and training is crucial to achieving career aspirations, and so she returned to study, part-time and via correspondence, achieving a Master of Wine Technology and Viticulture from the University of Melbourne. This equipped Sarah to develop her vineyard to the best possible standard using the most efficient methods possible, as well as helping create friendships that span Tasmania and have helped foster collaboration and partnerships.

Sarah’s decision to nominate to represent her community was driven by a strong desire to use her skills to deliver a positive future for all Tasmanians.

In her inaugural speech Sarah said “I want to utilise my talents, experience and energy and help Tasmania realise its full potential… My vision for Tasmania is one that capitalises on the opportunity that surrounds us with a government that assists and supports those who innovate and invest… I want Tasmania to be a place that encourages individuals, communities and businesses to be the best they can, always striving for improvement and not settling for mediocrity”.

Sarah is always well researched and prepared, and has the capacity to make the hard decisions when necessary. She brings with her a natural ability to resonate with all people from all walks of life, an attribute that allows her to genuinely represent her constituents and achieve outcomes that make a real and meaningful difference in their lives.

In addition to her Master of Wine Technology and Viticulture, Sarah also holds a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (1st class honours) and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Sydney.

Sarah is also deputy Chair of the Public Accounts Committee and has served on a number of Joint Select Committees including Future Gaming Markets and Greyhound Racing in Tasmania.

When Sarah has free time her favourite activities include sharing local food and wine with friends, getting on her road bike and relaxing at her property accompanied by her dog Lulu.
