Mark Shelton MP

Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly Chair of Committees, Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Development

As member for Lyons, Mark travels extensively throughout his electorate listening to the issues and concerns of the community. Mark was first elected to the House of Assembly in March 2010.

 He lives in the small township of Bracknell, with his wife Merrilyn.  They have 3 adult children and 6 grandchildren.  Mark knows firsthand the challenges faced by small communities and townships.

 He maintains a strong desire and passion to work hard for regional Tasmania and in doing so contribute towards creating a better place for future generations.

 Mark believes in the need for real change and continued development of our small business, agriculture and forestry sectors.  He knows the importance of a secure job and a community that supports its own.    Sound local planning can achieve equitable distribution of services throughout the Lyons electorate.

 Mark has been a member of numerous committees including, the Government Business Enterprise Estimates Committee, Community Development Committee, Parliamentary inquiry into the sale of TOTE and was the only Opposition member ever to chair an Estimates committee in the history of the Tasmanian Parliament.

Mark has a strong rural background and along with his brother operates a 200 acres property at Bracknell.  He held the shadow portfolios of Sport & Recreation, Racing, Consumer Affairs and Regional Development in opposition.

Mark enjoys the challenge of the Speaker, in keeping the House in order.

He currently is a member of the:  Privileges, GBE, and Integrity Committees.

 As a former TAFE and Adult Education teacher in automotive studies.  Mark is passionate about developing the skills through education that the next generation will need.  Mark was also the Mayor of the Meander Valley Council for 9 years and is a small business operator who is committed to:

 •The family unit and local communities

•Developing the potential of Lyons

•Working with communities to overcome issues

•Representing all the communities of Lyons

Mark is Patron & supporter of many sporting organisations and with a long sporting career in Football and Cricket himself; he is a big believer in the benefits of participation in team sports not just for the physical and social but for the mental development as well.

Mark is both honoured and proud to represent the communities of Lyons in a Will Hodgman lead Majority Liberal Government.
