A Tribute to One of Tasmania's Greatest Ever Premiers
- 14 Jan, 2020
Rod Scurrah, State President, Liberal Party of Tasmania (Tasmanian Division)
Will Hodgman will go down in history as one of the greatest and most successful ever Premiers of Tasmania.
We recognise and pay tribute to his significant service to our Party and our State over eighteen years as a Member of the House of Assembly, fourteen of those as the longest-serving State Liberal Leader and the last six years as Premier of Tasmania.
His immense, positive legacy will be long-lasting.
As Opposition Leader, Will firstly led the resurgence of the Liberal Party and then as Premier he importantly presided over the economic resurgence of Tasmania.
His Government has restored pride in Tasmania and what it means to be Tasmanian, and given our state a sense of confidence it hadn’t enjoyed for decades.
At the 2014 State Election, Will led the Liberals to victory with a record 15-seats in the 25-seat Parliament.
At the 2018 State Election, Will Hodgman and his team were re-elected in majority for a second term – only the second time in our state’s history the Liberal Party has achieved this.
Overall, the Liberal Party won greater than 50% share of the total vote at both elections, an extraordinary result.
It was the first time since the 1970s that any political party surpassed 50% of the primary vote in consecutive elections and the first time in over one hundred years that a conservative party achieved that result.
Will Hodgman leaves the position of Tasmanian Premier and Leader of the State Parliamentary Liberal Party at the top of his game, and the Tasmanian Division of the Liberal Party is sorry to see him go.
We thank Will Hodgman for his extraordinary leadership and service and we wish Will, Nicky and their family the very best for the future.
